“ You’ll Never Walk Alone “ is a usher tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. In the second work of the musical, Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the supporter Julie Jordan, sings “ You ‘ll Never Walk Alone ” to comfort and encourage Julie when her conserve, Billy Bigelow, the male conduct, unintentionally falls on to his knife whilst trying to run away after attempting a looting with his spouse Jigger and dies in her arms. Progressive rock group Pink Floyd took a recording by the Liverpool Kop choir, and “ interpolated ” it into their own song, “ Fearless “, on their 1971 album Meddle. From 1964 to 2010, Jerry Lewis concluded his annual Labor Day MDA Telethon by singing the birdcall. [ 5 ] After the end of a concert by the rock band Queen, the audience ad lib sang this sung, according to conduct guitarist Brian May, [ 6 ] and this helped to inspire the initiation of their songs “ We Are the Champions “ and “ We Will Rock You “. Italian-American tenor Sergio Franchi sang a luminary version accompanied by the Welsh Men ‘s Choir on the 9 June 1968 telecast of The Ed Sullivan Show. [ 7 ] He besides covered this song in his 1964 RCA Victor album The Exciting Voice of Sergio Franchi. In 1990, at the Nelson Mandela : An International Tribute for a Free South Africa concert at Wembley Stadium, London, the audience ad lib broke out into a multitude interpretation. [ 11 ] Fleming sang the song again at the Inauguration of Barack Obama on January 20, 2009. [ 12 ] In 2010, the song was sung during the last Night of the Proms, with the choir at the Royal Albert Hall in London joined by crowd of the public from Hillsborough Castle, Northern Ireland ; Caird Hall, Dundee ; Hyde Park, London ; Salford, Greater Manchester ; and Wales, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the end of Oscar Hammerstein II. [ 13 ] Lee Towers has been performing the sung from an antenna bring platform at the begin of every Rotterdam Marathon since 1995. It has been the sung of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps sung since 1954, where they foremost performed it as a character of their first sphere show in 1954. Challenged by the Rosemont Cavaliers singing “ Over the Rainbow “ in 1957, the corps responded with “ You ‘ll Never Walk Alone ”, and it has been the official corps sung ever since. Punk band Dropkick Murphys covered the sung for their 2017 album 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory. Vocalist/bassist Ken Casey said in a December 2016 interview discussing the argue behind their version. “ As you may know, opiate overdoses are an epidemic in America nowadays particularly in ( the Boston ) area. I ‘ve been to thirty wakes in two years, three this week, one being my cousin, Al ‘s lost a brother in law. It ‘s hit home close to us. I was leaving one of the wakes and this song came on and as I was listening to the lyrics it summed up precisely how I was feeling. Sad, but knowing there is hope. You never have to be alone. I hope you like our version ”. In 2020, Dutch radio DJ Sander Hogendoorn called radio stations throughout the country to air the birdcall simultaneously to support people affected by the coronavirus outbreak. Stations from early european countries joined him ; a total of 183 radio stations across the ball, [ 14 ] deoxyadenosine monophosphate well as football stadiums throughout Europe, played a version of You ‘ll Never Walk Alone. [ 15 ] Hoogendoorn ‘s station 3FM by and by held a week-long fund-raise political campaign named after the birdcall to support the Red Cross during the pandemic, collecting €307.392.- for the jacob’s ladder. Gerry and the Pacemakers adaptation [edit ]
In the UK, the song ‘s most successful cover was released in 1963 by the liverpudlian Merseybeat group Gerry and the Pacemakers, peaking at number one on the UK Singles Chart for four consecutive weeks. [ 21 ] The ring ‘s version besides reached the top of the charts in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. [ 22 ]
Liverpool F.C . [edit ]
After becoming a chart hit by a local dance band, the birdcall gained popularity on the Anfield terraces, and the birdcall cursorily became the football hymn of Liverpool F.C., which adopted “ You ‘ll Never Walk alone ” as its official motto on its coat of arms. [ 1 ] [ 23 ] [ 24 ] In 2013, the fiftieth anniversary of the song being sung on the Kop, Simon Hart of The Independent writes, “ Five decades on, the pre-match, scarfs-raised, sing-it-loud ritual is arsenic much a part of Liverpool ‘s fabric as their red shirts, its words written in work iron on the gates of their stadium. ” [ 1 ] According to erstwhile player Tommy Smith, lead singer Gerry Marsden presented Liverpool coach Bill Shankly with a recording of his forthcoming cover single during a pre-season coach slip in the summer of 1963. “ Shanks was in awe of what he heard. … football writers from the local anesthetic newspapers were travelling with our party and, thirsty for a narrative of any kind between games, filed copy back to their editors to the effect that we had adopted Gerry Marsden ‘s forthcoming single as the baseball club song. ” [ 25 ] The squad was subsequently invited to perform the track with the set on The Ed Sullivan Show with Marsden submit, “ bill came up to me. He said, ‘Gerry my son, I have given you a football team and you have given us a birdcall ‘. ” [ 1 ] Shankly picked the song as his eighth and final choice for the BBC ‘s Desert Island Discs on the eve of the 1965 FA Cup Final. [ 26 ] As Liverpool fans sang “ You ‘ll Never Walk Alone ” at Wembley during the 1965 FA Cup Final win over Leeds, commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme referred to it as “ Liverpool ‘s signature tune ”. [ 27 ] Marsden told BBC Radio how, in the 1960s, the disk jockey at Anfield would play the top ten-spot commercial records in descending order, with the number one unmarried played last, shortly before kickoff. Liverpool fans on the Kop would sing along, but unlike with other murder singles, once “ You ‘ll Never Walk Alone ” dropped out of the top ten, alternatively of disregarding the song, supporters continued to sing it. The song was adopted by scots team Celtic after a 1966 Cup Winners ‘ Cup semi-final against Liverpool at Anfield, and is now sung by celtic fans anterior to every home European link, [ 1 ] [ 27 ] [ 34 ] and late by Germany ‘s Borussia Dortmund, which Liverpool went on to play in the cup concluding. The sung has besides been adopted by Dutch team FC Twente after it was formally given to them by the Anfield stadium loudspeaker George Sephton during the last game in the Diekman stadium, before moving to the modern Arke Stadion. [ 36 ] Today, Twente fans sing the song before every home game. elsewhere in the Netherlands, Feyenoord and SC Cambuur have adopted the song angstrom well. A special record of the song was made in solidarity with Bradford City following the Valley Parade fire in 1985, when 56 spectators died and many more were seriously injured. The song was performed by The Crowd, which was a supergroup featuring Gerry Marsden, Paul McCartney and others, and spent two weeks at count one in the UK. Some years later, after witnessing a rendition of “ You ‘ll Never Walk Alone ” at Anfield in 2007, the President of the spanish Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blanco, said he felt inspired to seek lyrics to his state ‘s mute national hymn, the Marcha Real, ahead of Madrid ‘s bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games. [ 39 ] [ 40 ] During the 2014 Hong Kong protests, legislator Tam Yiu Chung quoted the song during a legislative council of Hong Kong confluence, to salute the Hong Kong Police, [ 41 ] who had received widespread criticism for using excessive pull against pro-democracy protesters. More than 2,000 Liverpool Football Club fans in Hong Kong condemned his inappropriate practice of the song, comparing his support of the patrol action to the police actions in the 1989 Hillsborough calamity, where South Yorkshire Police were found to have distorted facts relating to the unlawful kill by negligence of 96 Liverpool supporters. Marcus Mumford, spark advance singer of the british tribe rock band Mumford & Sons, released a cover interpretation of “ You ‘ll Never Walk alone ” as a unmarried on 20 March 2020 through Glassnote Records. [ 62 ] Mumford ‘s version was originally recorded for the Apple TV+ sports comedy-drama Ted Lasso ; it appears in the beginning season stopping point, “ The Hope That Kills You. ” [ 63 ]

On his Instagram report, Mumford explained the estimate behind releasing the song and revealing the charities that would benefit from sales of the song, “ It felt like we could get something out in the world that would benefit both of those organisations. ” [ 64 ] The song was in the works prior to the announcement of the global coronavirus pandemic and was originally slated to vent on a television display in production, but “ for lots of reasons we wanted it barely to be out in the earth oklahoman rather than later, thus here it is ”, the singer shared on his YouTube account. He stated why he released the birdcall earlier than planned, “ This is a cover of ‘You ‘ll never Walk Alone ‘, which I had recorded in January for Jason Sudeikis, who I know good. I recorded it because I did the music for his television receiver appearance and we spoke and felt like it was appropriate to try and get it out sooner. Michael Ball & Captain Tom Moore version [edit ]
In April 2020, to mark 99-year old Captain Tom Moore completing the first phase of his fund-raise walk during the COVID-19 pandemic, English actor, singer and broadcaster, Michael Ball sang “ You ‘ll Never Walk Alone ” for him live on BBC Breakfast. [ 71 ] Ball said : “ It ‘s an extraordinary accomplishment. I ‘ve been trying to think of a sung which encapsulates your accomplishment and what you have done for us. ” Within 24 hours, [ 72 ] the operation was recorded, and made into a digital single featuring the NHS Voices of Care Choir, and Moore ‘s talk words. [ 71 ] It was released by Decca Records [ 73 ] on 17 April, with all proceeds going to NHS Charities Together. The couple appeared on Zoe Ball ‘s Radio 2 appearance, where they both performed the song. [ 74 ]

On 19 April 2020, the birdcall went straightaway to act one in the United Kingdom ‘s “ The Official Big Top 40 “ chart, selling about 36,000 copies in its beginning 48 hours.
