The 2017 FA Community Shield ( besides known as The FA Community Shield supported by McDonald’s for sponsorship reasons ) was the 95th FA Community Shield, an annual football equal played between the winners of the previous season ‘s Premier League and FA Cup competitions. It was held at Wembley Stadium on 6 August 2017. The match was played between Chelsea, champions of the 2016–17 Premier League and Arsenal, who beat their opponents to win the 2017 FA Cup Final. Watched by a push of 83,325, Arsenal won the Shield 4–1 on penalties, after the match finished 1–1 after 90 minutes. Their police squad did not include Alexis Sánchez, Laurent Koscielny and Mesut Özil – all absent for differing reasons. Midfielder Cesc Fàbregas started against his former team, playing aboard N’Golo Kanté. New signings Álvaro Morata, Antonio Rüdiger and Willy Caballero were all named on the terrace. Striker Diego Costa was omitted from the Chelsea squad as he did not feature in coach Antonio Conte ‘s pre-season preparations.

After a subdued first base half, Chelsea took the lead in the 46th minute when Victor Moses scored. A late challenge by Pedro on Mohamed Elneny resulted in the Chelsea attacker being shown a loss card ; from the free-kick Arsenal were awarded, substitute Sead Kolašinac scored on his debut. As there were no far goals, the match was decided by a penalty shoot-out. Thibaut Courtois and Morata missed their penalties, leaving Giroud to score the winning one .

Founded in 1908 as a successor to the Sheriff of London Charity Shield, [ 3 ] the FA Community Shield began as a contest between the respective champions of the Football League and Southern League, although in 1913 it was played between an Amateurs XI and a Professionals XI. [ 4 ] In 1921, it was played by the league champions of the acme division and FA Cup winners for the foremost prison term. [ 5 ] [ a ] As part of a sponsorship deal between The Football Association ( FA ) and american restaurant range McDonald ‘s, the catch was formally referred to as “ The FA Community Shield supported by McDonald ‘s ”. [ 1 ] It was televised exist in the United Kingdom on BT Sport 1, [ 7 ] with highlights shown late that night on BBC One. [ 8 ] The FA brought forward the kick-off time an hour earlier to avoid a fixture clang with the UEFA Women ‘s Euro 2017 Final. [ 17 ] By contrast, Arsenal made their 22nd Community Shield appearance, and won 13, including one shared in 1991. Both clubs were meeting for the third base clock in the Shield ; their first meet 12 years ago ended 2–1 in Chelsea ‘s favor. [ 1 ] Both clubs received an allotment of approximately 28,300 tickets. Arsenal were housed in the east end of Wembley Stadium, while Chelsea fans occupied the west. [ 22 ] tag prices were advertised at a price of between £20 and £45 – juniors and seniors received concessions of up to £10. [ 23 ] Proceeds from the match went to those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire in June ; families of the victims, survivors, and emergency services personnel were invited to the consequence as guests. The teamsheets showed both clubs lined-up with a three-man defense. [ 25 ] Michy Batshuayi led the Chelsea attack, either side of Pedro and Willian. [ 25 ] Midfielder Cesc Fàbregas started against his erstwhile side, partnering N’Golo Kanté in midfield, while Moses and Marcos Alonso were deployed as wingbacks. [ 25 ] Defender Gary Cahill played his foremost competitive game as club captain ; he formally took over the province from John Terry in July. [ 26 ] Forward Alexandre Lacazette made his competitive debut for Arsenal, aboard Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi. [ 25 ] Defender Per Mertesacker, [ 14 ] whose performance against Chelsea in the Cup concluding earned plaudits, was named in the starting eleven. [ 25 ] Chelsea ‘s newfangled signings Antonio Rüdiger and Álvaro Morata began the game as substitutes, while Arsenal included Sead Kolašinac and Reiss Nelson in their matchday squad. [ 25 ]

Per Mertesacker was substituted in the first half, having suffered a head injury. The stadium observed a period of muteness in memory of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire ; wreaths were laid on the gear in memory moments before kick-off. The solution marked the first time Arsenal had won a penalty shoot-out in the Community Shield ; they had lost their previous two in 1993 and 2003. [ 30 ] For Chelsea, it was the fourth time in a rowing they had lost in the Shield.
