เกริ่นนำ ตั้งแต่ผมมาเรียนต่อที่ฝรั่งเศสเกือบ 5 ปีที่แล้ว เรียกได้ว่าไม่มีหนังสือวิชาการและกึ่งวิชาการเกี่ยวกับประเทศไทยตีพิมพ์ในภาษาฝรั่งเศสเลย ในภาพรวม การไม่มีงานตีพิมพ์อย่างจริงจังในภาษาฝรั่งเศส สะท้อนสภาวะความไม่ใส่ใจประเทศไทยและภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ผมคิดง่ายๆ ว่าส่วนหนึ่งคงเป็นเพราะการศึกษาเรื่องนี้ในอดีตผูกติดกับอาณานิคมอินโดจีนของฝรั่งเศส เมื่อฝรั่งเศสสูญเสียอาณานิคมดังกล่าวไป จึงไม่มีการส่งเสริมให้ศึกษาสาขานี้ต่อ หรืออย่างมากก็ศึกษาเพียงแต่ยุคที่อินโดจีนเคยเป็นอาณานิคม เพราะมีหลักฐานเก็บไว้ที่ฝรั่งเศสให้ศึกษาได้มาก นอกจากนี้ เนื่องจากมหาวิทยาลัยและหน่วยงานวิจัยในฝรั่งเศสส่วนมากเป็นของรัฐ ดังนั้นการลงทุนด้านการศึกษาในสาขาใดสาขาหนึ่ง ย่อมขึ้นอยู่กับผลประโยชน์ของรัฐด้วย เราจึงเห็นการศึกษาเรื่องอาฟริกาและตะวันออกกลาง รวมถึงการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับการก่อการร้ายและการอพยพลี้ภัย ได้รับการส่งเสริมเป็นพิเศษในช่วงนี้ หากเป็นเรื่องเอเชีย ส่วนมากก็จะมุ่งไปที่จีน ญี่ปุ่น อินเดีย เสียมากกว่า เพราะเหตุนี้ ในฝรั่งเศสจึงไม่มีหลักสูตรเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ศึกษา แบบเดียวกับที่มีในสหรัฐอเมริกาหรือในอังกฤษ เท่าที่ผมทราบ แม้แต่สาขา “ ประวัติศาสตร์เอเชีย ” ก็มีแต่เพียงที่มหาวิทยาลัยปารีส 7 ส่วนในสาขาไทยศึกษา ฝรั่งเศสมีผู้เชี่ยวชาญจำนวนหยิบมือ จำนวนมากเป็นอาจารย์ด้านภาษาและวรรณคดีที่ INALCO ผู้เชี่ยวชาญประเทศไทยด้านมนุษยศาสตร์สังคมศาสตร์สาขาอื่นนั้นมีน้อยมาก ในสาขาประวัติศาสตร์ ไม่มีนักวิชาการฝรั่งเศสที่เชี่ยวชาญประวัติศาสตร์ไทยแม้แต่คนเดียวที่สามารถคุมวิทยานิพนธ์ปริญญาเอกได้ เป็นเหตุให้ผมในฐานะนักเรียนประวัติศาสตร์ต้องหาอาจารย์ที่ปรึกษาร่วมจากต่างประเทศเพื่อมาคุมวิทยานิพนธ์ สุดท้ายแล้ว ผมคิดว่าในด้านไทยศึกษาในฝรั่งเศส คนที่โดดเด่นที่สุดคือ Jean Baffie ( เร็วๆ นี้ วารสาร Moussons …
